Collective Nouns

Editing my diary has caused me to reflect on some of the odd collective nouns provided by the language.  My late friend, Olive Brown, had two of her own invention.  They were (1) a reluctancy of volunteers; and (2) a crimewave of Kurds.  She had Kurdish lodgers in her spare rooms, plotting … whatever Kurds used to plot back in 1970.

However I offer the following authentic collective noun which I came across in 2011 when examining some lovely woodcuts at the art gallery in Llangefni.  How do you like: “a loomery of guillemots”?

  1. Love “a loomery of guillemots”. We like inventing collective nouns and driving down the motorway we were trying toinvent one for cones.
We came up with either a conference or a congress of cones, though the latter sounds as if they are breeding! Mind you when you see how many there are, you do wonder.
Also related to cones, we came up with the following
A lonesome cone – one on its own
A collapsed cone – one that’s been run over
Alien cone or cone alone – one which does not match the others in the group

  2. Hmm it appears like your site ate my first comment (it was super long) so I guess I’ll just sum
it up what I had written and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying
your blog. I as well am an aspiring blog writer but I’m still new to everything.

Do you have any helpful hints for rookie blog writers?

    I’d genuinely appreciate it.
